Today was an experience. It started off pretty normal with collecting eggs and feeding the chickens, but then plans changed and other than cleaning the pigs (which would have been disgusting) we cleaned out the brewer house. This is a small greenhouse that the broiler chicks can grow in. We started off by capturing all 1000 chickens and crating them up so that we could clean out their bedding, and here is where the fun began.
We shoveled out all of the bedding that the chicks had and threw it onto the back of the truck. I wish I could have taken a picture because the entire bed of the truck was full of chicken crap and bedding. As some of you may know that chicken crap is pretty disgusting, so multiply that by 1000 and you can understand how gross this mountain of s#!t was. Then it was kinda fun because we got to shovel all of it off the truck onto the garden.
After that lovely experience we went down and learned that the 1000 chicks that were picked up today were in the car with the windows rolled up. All the windows were fogged up and the car was close to 90*. We pulled all the chickens out and looked in and it looked like most of the chickens were actually dead. After pulling them out and sorting through the ones that were dead and those that were still moving we seemed to have lost 75+ chicks. I had to hand sort through all of the chicks and see if they were still alive. This might have disturbed me a little more than just killing the chickens did. Cant wait to see what I have to do tomorrow.
Wow! Why were the chicks left in the car in such high temperatures? Is that usual? Tough job you had to do, Noah.
