Starting At the Farm

The fist couple days at the farm have been a lot of fun and also a lot of work. Every day after working I have been coming home and sleeping because I am so tired, but I feel very fulfilled with my day because I have done so much. The first day I learned all about the farm and Jeff, my sponsor, showed me all around and where all the animals are. We collected all of the eggs and had to herd all of the chickens back into the greenhouse because they escaped. I have been working both days on moving a lot of bush because there is a permanent fence that is going up, and we need to move all of the bush out of the way. All this bush is from 200 trees that covered what is now going to be pasture.
A couple things that I have learned so far is that you really do not have to be gentle with the animals. This sounds odd, but when collecting eggs, or just walking through where the chickens are you can just push them out of your way or just move them. Also I have learned that 800 laying chickens produce so many eggs a day. Yesterday I collected the eggs at around 1pm and I filled 3 full 5 gallon buckets with eggs, and there were still enough eggs to fill maybe another full bucket. Finally I have learned that pig crap is some of the grossest stuff on this plannet. I got a little speck on me the first day, and it took a long shower to get that smell completely off me.
