Week 1

This week has seen us make a lot of progress towards our goal of actually taking a turkey. We purchased two call boxes. To use one, we need to scratch the edge of the box with a piece of wood and it imitates the sound of a turkey yelp and cluck. The other call is much simpler and all we need to do is push a wooden stick which creates friction and imitates the turkey purr or a different yelp. Grant is still working on his turkey mouth calls and I am still trying to perfect my crow call. After a week of practice, we are getting much better with the crossbow. The bow is dialed in for ten, twenty, and now even thirty yards. However, we aim to be shooting between 10 and 20 yards. When we shoot our target, we consistently hit within the first three rings (3 inches from the bullseye) and hit the bullseye probably about one in four shots. At 10 yards, our accuracy is obviously the best. We usually hit bullseye half the time and in the first ring (one inch off) the other half. Going out to 20 yards, our accuracy diminishes a bit and we don't have many bullseyes. However, we are almost always within three inches of the bullseye, which would most certainly kill a turkey. Next week, we look forward to finishing up our practice shooting and getting down to the real business of hunting out in the woods.
