Kaitlyn Cerne's 5th Blog

Today was a very exciting day at University Hospital because I was able to observe in an operating room. Though I was unable to know the exact procedure being done due to patient consent and confidentiality, I was still bale to dress in scrubs and observe the operation up close. Dressing in the scrubs and getting washed for surgery allowed me to see how surgeon prepare for an operation. After watching a few surgeries, I was able to meet with one of the operation nurses who showed me the ball located in the hip which is removed during a hip replacement. The bone was porous due to arthritis. It was also covered in blood because it was just recently removed from a patient. It was very cool to say the least! Just walking around and observing different surgeries in the OR, it became even more evident to me that this job is something that I would love to pursue. I am very excited to be studying pre-med next year at Ohio State. For about an hour at the  end of the day, I was also bale to meet a few psychiatric nurses who work in a psychiatric ward. It was very interesting to ask them questions about their job because they provided me with a lot of insight because I took psych at Hawken this year.

  1. Wow Kaitlyn, I am so impressed that you are able to go into these operating rooms and handle the action without getting lightheaded. It's great that you have such a hands-on project on a subject that you are actually going to pursue in college. I wish you the best of luck on the remainder of your adventure at UH.
