Welcome to Metheny Weir Custom Finishes on Larchmere in
Cleveland. I walked into the little corner shop and was quickly greeted by Sue and
Kim, the owners, who were dressed in tailored jeans, fab white
I-just-threw-this-on shirts, both artistically splattered with paint.
The shop was just as cute as the two Southern accented
owners. Fairy-lights hung from the ceiling, in-progress pieces of furniture
pushed along the walls (which are covered by chalkboards and bulletin boards
filled with magazine cut-out inspirations), and coffee was brewing next to
their home-cooked breakfast cake.
Could my day get any better? Just being in this space made
me smile. But yes, yes it did get better. Right off the bat Kim handed me a
stool and, after quickly showing me the Annie Sloan painting technique, let me
get to work with a paintbrush.

“Be careful,” Kim casually mentioned after I had already
painted the first coat. “The client is coming to pick it up tomorrow.”
I tried not to let my horror show (and I don’t think it did,
thank goodness) after learning, halfway through, that this wasn’t just
practice.
But you know what? It turned out all right. The quaint
little stool, originally black, not “Old White” fit in seamlessly with the
other furniture pieces in the workshop.
I think I could get used to this field of work.
