Kaitlyn Cerne's Third Blog
On Friday, I was able to shadow a fifth year surgical resident names Bob. Bob was in the fifth year of his residency at University Hospitals and is studying to become a surgeon. Bob provided me with a lot of insight about the process of becoming a surgical doctor and told me stories about his residency. Bob also showed me pictures of all the surgeries he has participated in. He was also able to take me to see a colonoscopy. In addition to this, I met the team that Bob worked with. The team consisted of two nurse practitioners, one names Karen and the other named Mary. I was able to spend a good amount of time with Mary as she showed me all the work that she does for the team as a nurse practitioner. Also on the team was a second year surgical resident named Vineeta. The head of the team was Attending Doctor Karen Stein. Together, all of these people work together to accomplish one task. That goal is to provide the best possible care and outcomes for the many patients they see on a daily basis. They described to me the teamwork and communication that was essential in order to provide these things. Each person on the team brings something to the table. Communication is vital between team members because medicine is like a puzzle and every little bit of information is important to solving the what is best for the patient or diagnosing a patient.

Kaitlyn, you certainly seem to be in contact with a wide variety of medical personnel. Is working in a hospital what you thought it would be? Is it better or worse? Has your idea of pursuing medicine shifted at all in these couple of weeks?
